Henry Richard dies at the age of 84

It is definitely a sad period for all Canadiens ice hockey fans. This is due to the passing of the famous ice hockey Hall of Famer, Henry Richard. Richard died at the age of 84 on Friday, 6 March after his long battle with Alzheimer’s.

His death was officially announced by the Canadiens’ on the same day of his death. Earlier on, Canadian based French magazine, Le Journal de Montréal announced the sportsman’s Alzheimer’s diagnosis in 2015.

 

The History of Henry Richard

 

Born in 1936, Richard is well known for his 20-year ice hockey career. The former Montreal Canadiens centerman played for the team in the National Hockey League for his entire 20-year career. Also, his older brother, Maurice Richard, is also a popular Hall of Famer.

Maurice Richard also played for the Montreal Canadiens as their Right-wing for 18 years. Both brothers have left a huge gap in the ice hockey league. Meaning, their shoes will be pretty hard to fill.

Also, the sporting legend still sets the record for the longest-serving Montreal Canadiens player. At 1256 games, 358goals and 688 assists, Richard is the best serving player and will forever be remembered. To show this, his number 16 jersey was retired by the hockey team.

Henry Richard is also known as the Canadiens’ Ice Hockey team captain from 1971 to 1975. On top of it all, he was the all-star player ten times. In 1979, Richard was inaugurated into the Hockey Hall of Fame.
