On Wednesday the government of Saskatchewan declared a state of emergency. This was due to the concerns of the growth of coronavirus.

8 new cases of the virus were announced leading to the Saskatchewan Premier Scott Moe to make the announcement. The number including the 8 has gotten to a total of 16 cases. 

A state of emergency means that the provincial government has been granted extra power to keep the virus from spreading.

Therefore they are doing all they can to make sure the pandemic does not spread.

In his statement, Moe said that it is necessary to act quickly. Although he does not remember the last time this Canadian province enacted a provincewide state of emergency.

He went on to say that at the end of the day the goal is to stop COVID-19 from spreading rapidly like it is doing. 

This order has a life span of 14 days.  And he said if there is a need for renewal then it will definitely be renewed.

Measures Established in Saskatchewan

Some of the measure enacted in this province to stop the spread of this virus include:

  1. All public gatherings of more than 50 people are being prohibited. 
  2. From Monday 23 March, there is going to be a phased-in work policy implemented by All government of Saskatchewan ministries, agencies as well as Crown corporations. 
  3. Gyms, fitness centres, all casinos and bingo halls are ordered to close until further notice.
  4. Traveling outside of the province is being prohibited unless you are commuting for work or you live in border communities.
  5. All restaurants and bars are required to limit their seating capacity to a maximum of 50 people. This is so that all the patrons may be able to have a meter or two distance from each other.
  6. All the surgeries and the procedures that are not urgent are all being postponed starting from the 23rd.

Advises to  Saskatchewan Residents

People are still being urged to stay in their homes, especially those who have just returned from travelling. 

The most important thing to do is to practice social distance, you can play online casino games to avoid boredom. This was emphasized due to one of the recent cases.

Although all of the cases are people who have recently travelled. One new case was a person who did not travel.

The patient caught the illness from sharing a household with someone who had traveled and they contracted the illness.

Residents are also being advised to be prepared for a long lockdown as it may continue for a while. Schools may not be opened anytime soon and large events may also not be allowed. Although some of the things may be relaxed.

The county has about 727 confirmed cases and 9 deaths so far. The world at large has 221,290 confirmed cases and 9,997 deaths so far.
