The World Health Organisation (WHO), has been under a lot of pressure recently. This is all due to the seemingly non-ending Coronavirus. Recently, the reported cases of the virus are said to be over 100 000 worldwide.
This has left the world in panic mode as everyone has been left fearing for who it will get next. Also, a lot of hearsay and speculations form social media do not seem to be helping in any way. Instead, they are actually making people panic more.
Therefore, here is an official statement from the World Health Organisation. This will at least give you accurate information on all that has to do with the Coronavirus.
World Health Organisation Dismisses the Idea of COVID-19 Being a Pandemic
World Health Organisation Officials Dr Micheal Ryan (left ) and Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus (right) giving the media briefing. The World Health Organisation is trying by all means to shy away from using “pandemic” when referring to the Corona Virus. According to WHO, the term is inappropriate adding further information from their Executive Director as to why.
According to Dr Michael Ryan, WHO Executive Director, it can only be a pandemic when it starts uncontrollably spreading from one country to another. As of now, the virus is only being found in some parts of the world. On the other hand, some countries are still yet to report of any cases of COVID-19.
WHO Working on Controlling the Virus
According to Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, the WHO Director-General, the World will not be left at the mercy of the Corona Virus. This was after his update on how the World Health Organisation has managed to control the Ebola epidemic in DRC.
In his words, “The threat of the pandemic has become very real, but this would be the first pandemic that can be controlled.” Meaning, the organisation probably now has methods being put into place to curb the virus.
What Still Needs to Be Done to Control the Corona Virus
According to Dr Tedros, “It’s not about either containment or mitigation. It’s about both.” Furthermore, he urges all countries with reported cases of COVID-19 virus to close schools and generally limit mass gatherings.
On the other hand, the WHO is now sending countries at high risk personal protective equipment. Also, the organisation is giving out lab supplies that can be of use. They still remain with the fact that there is hope in curbing the virus.
Conclusion
According to the media briefing from the WHO, there is still hope. Proper implementation of the different control measures being put in place will help in the fight. The Coronavirus has been controlled in some places, meaning there is hope in some parts of the world.
